Brief History of Pastoral Ministry/Witness in Northern Uganda
1910 marked the beginning of the pastoral ministry/witness of the Catholic Church
in Northern Uganda by the Comboni Missionaries from Italy. Since then, the Church has grown and continues
to grow in strength and number with a remarkable increase in number of local clergy, religious men and
women (nuns and brothers), seminarians and catechists who are pastoral agents in the evangelization of
the people in that portion of the universal Church.
Three years from now (2011), the Archdiocese of Gulu will celebrate the centenary of faith in
Northern Uganda. Beside bringing a change in the spiritual life of the people, the presence and the
witness of the church in Northern Uganda has contributed to more than 60% of social and economic
development of the people in terms of education, health care and other development, a testimony
that the church cares for both spiritual and the material needs of her people.
The Acholi people in Northern Uganda think that their lives would never be the same without
the pastoral ministry and witness of the Catholic Church in Northern Uganda. Thanks to the generosity
of all the good and generous people who contribute to the mission of the church to help improve the
quality of the lives of those less fortunate.
